3 tips to reduce the environmental footprint of your events

We live in a world where the environment is a concern at the heart of everyone’s mind. So it’s important, for your clients as well as for you, that your company be eco-responsible. To make sure your catering service reflects your values and those of your clients, here are three techniques you can apply without much trouble that will reduce your environmental footprint while improving your business’s image!

1. Try to order your food from local producers

Buy local! It will significantly reduce the amount of transportation needed for the food to reach you, which reduces the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere and helps support the local economy. On top of that, your food will be fresher when it arrives!

2. Apply the 3 “R”s of ecology

Reuse, Recycle, Reduce. How? For example, by using reusable dishes and containers, compostable cardboard tableware, aluminum cans instead of plastic bottles for drinks (if pitchers can’t be used) and by reducing the amount of packaging you use, so that you only wrap what is truly necessary… You could even ask your client to have recycling bins available for the event. Have food surpluses? There are various organizations for that (such as La Tablée des Chefs or La Maison du Père de Montréal) where you can send your recovered surpluses, which they will use to feed people in need. Amazing, right? Of course, there are many other ways to apply the 3 “R”s; you just need to be a little creative.

3. Use management and communication software

Instead of using a phenomenal amount of paper to track your orders and communicate with your teams, you can do all of it on the web, which will save a significant number of trees. At the same time, the application will let you increase your efficiency and your speed of action.

You now know what it takes to start reducing your business’s environmental footprint on our planet. To do even more, you could work toward the Canadian Leaf eco-responsibility certification for restaurateurs, as described here. On top of helping the environment, this certification will help your business by attracting more clients who are interested in hosting eco-responsible events! And don’t forget: going green is easier than you think.
