The ghost kitchen phenomenon

Cook in front of a flare-up in a professional kitchen

Are you having meals delivered more often than before? You’re far from alone. Deliveries have soared with Uber Eats and DoorDash, to the point that a new food service concept was born: the ghost kitchen.

What is a ghost kitchen?

Ghost kitchen, dark kitchen, virtual restaurant or cloud kitchen: it’s always a restaurant that offers only delivery or takeout. No dining room.

The advantages for restaurant owners

Significant savings. No large space to rent, no dishes, furniture or decor to buy. Fewer employees needed, which also helps with the labour shortage.

Affordable visibility. Delivery platforms let small restaurants get known and deliver quickly, without building their own service.

Freedom to experiment. A virtual restaurant can change its menu or launch a new concept very quickly, keeping pace with trends.

What to know before you start

Location still matters. Customers need to be within a radius of about five kilometres; otherwise, the apps won’t show your restaurant.

Technology is essential. Caterer Manager lets you offer online ordering, take orders in advance, and manage purchasing and production, delivery and takeout.
